Every voice matters
Calgary is a strong and vibrant community with a rich diversity of people. We recognize that the existence of racism and other forms of systemic inequities (the longstanding practices and behaviours that make life harder for some groups and easier for others) must be addressed to make our community even stronger.
The Calgary Foundation strives to create an inclusive organization that reflects the community we serve. We work hard to create an organizational culture where diverse peoples with the relevant skillset – staff, volunteers, and board – can raise their perspectives authentically and for those voices to matter and impact decisions. Our approach to diversity is not about quotas or numbers but about creating meaningful inclusion and ensuring that different backgrounds and insights are valued and respected.
Our Commitments
Commitment 1
We’re committed to removing systemic barriers and discrimination, especially those connected to race and inequity. We know that barriers are amplified with intersectionality (when people hold more than one marginalized identity, for example being both female and racialized).
Commitment 2
Achieving reconciliation and equity means listening, learning, and being open to growth – even when it challenges us. We are committed to turning that learning into real actions, developed together with the people we work with and serve. We know this is not a one-time effort, but an ongoing journey without a finish line.
Commitment 3
We build inclusive and equitable relationships by working alongside diverse communities and striving to reflect the people we serve, in both our organization and our work.
Commitment 4
We want many voices and experiences to shape our decisions, our policies, our work, and our identity as an organization. When diverse voices are heard and communities are empowered, people can thrive and reach their full potential. We are committed to amplifying perspectives that are too often overlooked, as a way to lend support or create opportunities.
