Albertans greatly value wildlife and beautiful open landscapes. An important strategy to maintaining these features is a connected landscape where rivers can flow, habitats can thrive, and wildlife can move. Connected landscapes are threatened by infrastructure development humans need to survive, such as housing and roads. Miistakis Institute and partners are working in two areas experiencing high level of land use change, the Greater Calgary Region and Southwestern Alberta to develop and implement solutions to keep landscapes connected. Together we will address gaps in science, conservation planning and policy and socialization of connected landscapes. This will benefit communities through improved mental and physical health, benefit wildlife by enabling movement to access food, water and mates and benefit ecosystems by increasing climate resilience.
