For charitable organizations, securing sustainable financial resources to support the organization can be an on-going challenge.
Working with Calgary Foundation, charities can establish a fund to assist in providing undesignated annual income to support their charitable goals, as part of its long-term plan for creating financial stability. By placing your organization’s assets at Calgary Foundation, you benefit from the substantial knowledge and experience of our staff. We can offer advice and guidance on financial tools and resources that can be used to set up a fund, as well as ideas to help grow the fund, helping to achieve your long-term charitable goals.
Once a charitable organization has set up a fund / account at the Foundation:
- The charity will have access to information on the fund through our Donor Central service
- Calgary Foundation may accept donations on your behalf, and issue tax receipts directly to donors
- Calgary Foundation can disburse income on an annual basis as per the annual distribution policy
- Offer advice on growing your fund, including legacy planning or other endowment building programs

Types of Funds
Charitable Organization Endowment Funds create meaningful, long-term financial sustainability for a charity. Establishing this type of Fund by gifting the assets to the Foundation enables donors to make additional contributions, both living and testamentary. Charities in good standing receive an annual distribution from the Fund, which provides a regular source of operating income to support the organization’s working capital.
Funds Administered for Others are designed to meet your organization’s needs for the investment of your assets, while still maintaining ownership. These assets are also invested in the Foundation’s primary endowment.
Donor Designated Funds are permanent endowment Funds established by a donor to support a charitable organization in perpetuity. A Donor Designated Fun can be an effective tool for organizations focused on building long-term relationship with their donors. As part of legacy planning discussions, an organization can suggest that establishing an endowment at the Calgary Foundation is an impactful way to benefit the charity in perpetuity, while honouring the legacy of the individual and/or family.
Calgary Foundation acknowledges the support of the Canada Cultural Investment Fund, through the Endowment Incentives component. This program encourages private donors to contribute to endowment Funds for non-profit professional arts organizations so they can access future funding and find long-term stability.
